Welcome to our latest newsletter from American Management and Leadership by Design! In this edition, we are tackling the topic of mastering the art of influence—a critical skill for effective leadership. Honestly, it is a critical skill for everyone. We all need to be influential with our peers and within our circle, regardless of position. If you are not leveraging some form of influence, well my friend, you are desperately missing the boat!! As leaders, our ability to influence others directly impacts our success and the success of our organizations. We’ll explore the importance of leveraging social intelligence when interacting with multiple generations, as well as turning our greatest weaknesses into strengths. Let’s embark on this journey together!

Leveraging Social Intelligence Across Generations

In today’s diverse workforce, leaders must navigate interactions with individuals from various age groups and backgrounds. Leveraging social intelligence—the ability to understand and navigate social situations effectively—is crucial for building strong relationships and fostering collaboration across generations.

If you are not leveraging some form of influence, well my friend, you are desperately missing the boat!!

Research shows that leaders who possess high levels of social intelligence are better equipped to connect with diverse teams, resolve conflicts, and inspire others to achieve common goals. By honing this skill, leaders can bridge generational gaps, promote inclusivity, and create a positive work environment where everyone feels valued and respected.

Turning Weaknesses Into Strengths

We all have areas where we can improve, but what if we could turn our greatest weaknesses into our greatest strengths? Seriously, you have the ability to pivot as needed and the only limiting you really face in life are the limitations you place on yourself. So with that said, decide to be and do things differently. You have the power to decide and to act upon your decisions. There is no more “I can’t”. There is only “I will” and by recognizing our weaknesses and proactively addressing them, we can unlock our full potential as leaders.

For example, if you struggle with patience and being mentally and emotionally present during conversations, consider implementing strategies to improve your listening skills. Make it a rule of thumb to ask two follow-up questions during conversations or allocate a different time to engage in deeper discussions when you can be more engaged. Remember, effective communication is essential for building trust and fostering meaningful connections with your team.

You’ve got the Power

Backstory: When watching Abbott Elementary, the principal said something to one of the teachers in jest. What the principal did not know what the level of influence she really had on this individual. When she realized it, she said, “damn, my words have weight like that? Huh, I should be more reckless with my words” and walked off. It was very funny due to the absurdity of the events that unfolded.

Point: Many of us are painfully unaware of the level of influence and weight our words have. As a result, we have a responsibility to use the power, influence, and weight of our words to uplift, inspire, push, and guide our employees to greatness, or at least the very best version of themselves. Nihar Chhaya stated, “When you’re in charge, it’s noble to want the best for your team as politics and turf wars arise. But your people need honest and transparent coaching to grow, not your rescuing them” (HBR.org, 2024). If you understood how powerful you are, you would be unstoppable.

Recommendations for Using Influence Effectively

Now we would be remiss if we didn’t address actual strategies, tips, and recommendations to influence effectively. So let’s begin with something that can be used for so many areas when leading and guiding others and that is walking the talk; also known as leading by example.

  1. Lead by Example: As a leader, your actions speak louder than words. Lead by example and demonstrate the values and behaviors you want to see in your team members. By modeling integrity, accountability, and empathy, you can inspire others to follow suit and uphold high standards of performance and conduct.
  2. Empower Your Team with Support: Empowerment is a powerful tool for driving motivation and engagement among your team members. Delegate responsibilities, provide opportunities for growth and development, and encourage autonomy and initiative. To empower your employees effectively, you need to do so with support. Specifically, make sure that your employees have the proper training, tools, and processes to execute the new responsibility well. It is important that when you do empower, you have a plan to do so well.
  3. Build Strong Teams: Team building is essential for fostering collaboration, enhancing communication, and cultivating a sense of camaraderie among team members. Plan team-building activities that promote trust, cooperation, and mutual support. Investing in team building not only strengthens interpersonal relationships but also improves morale and productivity.
  4. Communicate Effectively: Communication is the cornerstone of effective leadership. Practice active listening, provide constructive feedback, and communicate openly and transparently with your team members. By fostering clear and honest communication channels, you can build trust, resolve conflicts, and align everyone towards common goals.

Influence is a powerful tool that can shape the culture, tone, and success of an organization. By leveraging social intelligence, turning weaknesses into strengths, and implementing effective leadership strategies, you can maximize your impact as a leader and inspire others to reach their full potential.
